This seated Madonna and Child in the Romanesque and Gothic tradition comes from a time when the way Mary was represented was changing. Since the 8th century, the Romanesque image of the Mother of God, also called the Virgin in Majesty or Throne of Wisdom, had gradually been transforming into the Gothic image of the Mother of Jesus or Virgin of Tenderness. A closer relationship was portrayed between the figures, using a pronounced naturalistic style. The Virgin of Saint Mary in Foris dates from a time of transition, when the Gothic style was becoming popular but the traditions of previous centuries still prevailed.
