Madonna and child with an angel inv. 1890

A curtain pulled back with an illusionistic effect shows a window opening onto a room, near which a Madonna and Child stands in the presence of an angel on the left, who, naturally, is partly covered by the curtain that falls over his shoulder. It holds in his hand a violin that has stopped playing, taken by the interest in Mary and Jesus. The intrados of the opening is coffered and in perspective, in the name of a fine decorativism, and on the parapet which coincides with the lower edge the painting is supported by a book, which Mary leafs through (reference to the prophecies of the Holy Scriptures), a pillow on which the Child is resting and a raised cup full of red fruits, cherries or grapes, towards which Jesus stretches his hand: it is of an allusion to the blood of the Passion and to Christ's acceptance of his own destiny. This allusion is also taken up by the red fruit that he already holds in his hand.
