Work Notes: Paul Tucker has provided the following information about the 'Madonna and Child with Sts. Elizabeth and John' after Raphael/Giulio Romano, from Charled Fairfax Murray's diaries in Paris:CFM to W.S. Spanton, Hotel d'Angleterre Piazza Vittorio Emanuele Pisa March 1st 1872"I have bought three pictures here cheap - I thought it might be possible for me to come to Italy again but many chances do not occur of buying Moronis for 25 francs I have bought also a full sized copy of Raphael's Madonna with the Pearl at [?Madrid] if it is very fine but damaged by fire I have paid very little for it on that account it looks // a splendid picture in spite of all damage I am still troubled by the difficulty of getting it safe to England they may suppose it to be the original in their ignorance & detain it - it looks like a grand old picture that had been neglected for centuries. The copy of Raphael's Madonna swallowed my money - The fun of it is the dealer I bought it of wont believe my occupation is painting because I was // so hard to deal with - I should have given nearly as much as he asked but for a friend of mine here who advised me to wait - I got it for little more than half what he first asked but I had to risk losing it for more than a week ...'CFM to W.S. Spanton, Pisa March 11th 1872'I have also a large duplicate as I told you of the 'Madonna with the Pearl'CFM to W.S. Spanton 106 Via de' Serragli, Firenze - 14 June 1885'While I think of it - would you kindly get me Brauns photogr: of the [Rapahel] Madonna called "La Perla" at Madrid when you are ordering something of the Autotype Co - it isn't worth while writing for specially but I have long wanted it for the sake of comparison with my duplicate of the picture this is the more desirable now that I find the veil of the Madonna is omitted in my picture which is rather an important item/ & it becomes doubtful if the picture I have was ever quite finished in parts/ The measurements of my picture appear to correspond to the other which strengthens my hypothesis that // this is not a copy but a duplicate done also in the school from the same cartoon...'.
