Im christlichen Glauben ist der Apfel die Frucht der Erbsünde, die von Eva von der Schlange genommen und von Adam gegessen wurde; der Apfel, den Christus hält, ist hier ein Zeichen der Erlösung von dieser Sünde. Sowohl die Mutter als auch das Kind schauen zuversichtlich in eine Richtung, so dass sich der Betrachter in dem direkten Blick der blauen Augen von Jesus und Maria Trost finden kann.

In Christian thought, the apple is the fruit of original sin, taken by Eve from the snake and eaten by Adam; the apple held by Christ is here a sign of redemption from this sin. Both mother and child are confidently looking in one direction, so that the beholder could seek consolation in the direct blue gaze of Jesus and Mary.
