The
altarpiece certainly comes from a Franciscan church, but there are doubts as
to the identification of the character: it might be Count Leonardo Martinengo
delle Cossere, patron of the altar of St. Anthony in San Francesco in Brescia
and client of Romanino in his palace.
The
combination of greys is remarkable, as is the classical composure of the
figures, whose facial features are very attenuated. Unfortunately, previous attempts at conservation
prevent us from fully appreciating the chromatic and material qualities of
Romanino's painting.
