  • Description: This artist was active predominantly in Siena, but also in other towns of northern Italy. In the mature stage of his career, he combined his interest in detailed naturalistic investigation with his search for monumentality. The painting, in fairly good condition, presents the Virgin holding the Child in swaddling clothes and sitting on a red fabric with golden decoration, according to the iconographic motif of the Madonna of Humility. On either side of them, there are two kneeling saints: St. John and St. Peter on the left; St. Paul and St. Anthony on the right. The upper half of the panel contains a representation of the Trinity according to the iconographic type of Thronum gratiae. According to scholars, it is possible to connect the Madonna of Humility to Taddeo Gaddi’s activity in Liguria, close in time to his execution of the Baptism in Triora in 1397.
