Madonna of the coazzone

The Madonna ‘of the coazzone’owes
its name to the dialect term for the long plait hanging down her back, a
hairstyle very fashionable among the ladies of late fifteenth-century Milan. The sculpture comes from Milan Cathedral
and is attributed to Pietro Antonio Solari, son of the architect Guiniforte. The forms are elegant, the drapes simplified
and the contours of the face softened, in line with the classicist trend
occurring towards the end of the fifteenth century.
