The Virgin is painted here without divine
connotations, like a very human maternal figure. A resemblance has been found
in her face to a member of the Nuvolone family, also found in other paintings. Furthermore,
the lack of landscape and the absence of Joseph focus the viewer's attention on
the relationship between Mother and Child and on the feelings that transpire
through various signs of expressivity. In
the agile twist of the Child we can still find the "motion of
affection" developed by Leonardo da Vinci and revisited in the lessons of
Correggio and of painters from Emilia.
