This beautiful Madonna and Child came to the Museum in 1950 with
other sculptural fragments from the neo-Gothic tower of Villa Tittoni in Desio. It is generally recognised to have been
originally at the centre of the tabernacle of the tomb of Azzone Visconti,
still in its original site, the church of San Gottardo in Corte in Milan,
probably built between 1340 and 1342 by Giovanni di Balduccio and
collaborators.
