Madonna with Child

Jacopino da Tradate

Sforzesco Castle

Sforzesco Castle
Milan, Italy

Jacopino da Tradate was a sculptor well known in his lifetime
and prominent personality in the construction site of Milan Cathedral. His Madonna
and Child on display in Castello Sforzesco is of unknown origin and can be
dated to around the 1420s. It
was designed to be seen from all sides, as shown by the soft folds sculpted on
the back, and the fluid, abundant drapery envelops the body of the Virgin,
almost hiding it. This work is one of the supreme examples of Jacopino's art
and of his elegant language.
