Madonna with Child

Lucas Cranach the Elder's (1472 -1553) depiction of the Madonna shows a youthful, almost childlike innocence and beauty. Together with the wonderful "Judgement of Paris" - a sensuous and coquette documentation of the Renaissance rediscovery of mythological tales - Cranach's small lime wood panel of the "Madonna with Child" is among the most charming works in the Kunsthalle.

Mary appears in richly coloured clothing before a broad landscape, which glistens in the early sunlight. She holds the child protectively in her arms. He raises both hands to her, appearing to touch her, perhaps wishing to comfort her. Since both, despite the deep harmony between them, bear a serious look, clouded by the knowledge of the Son's mission.
