Description: From the parish church of Besate, this painting entered the Archbishop’s Picture Gallery in the mid-eighties, and has been part of the Diocesan Museum collections since 1997. This painting had long been connected with a document from 1524 that attributed its original location to the parish of Besate. Actually, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the parish priest of the time, looking for the finances to restore the painting, falsified some documents that attested to both the presence of the painting in the parish of Besate since ancient times and to its having been painted by Leonardo. The pastor achieved his goal and the restoration was conducted in the early years of the twentieth century by Cavenaghi, who moved the paint film onto a canvas. In 1905, the altarpiece was returned to the site and the inscription on the step of the throne of the Virgin, “HOC OPUS FIERI COMUNITAS BESATI” was done at that time. The image is a strongly devotional piece, a sort of sacra conversazione composed in a typically Leonardesque pyramidal structure. According to the most recent studies, the Besate altarpiece is probably an example of the late activity of the Lombard painter, replicating formulas that are a bit stiff and his tendency to further accentuate the stillness of the figures. This work can be dated to a time close to the painter's death, which occurred in 1524.
