Formerly this figure held in her hands the attributes of a tower and a book, added in the nineteenth century, which were supposed to identify her as St. Barbara. But she is probably a Madonna whose child, held before her breast with his back supported by her right arm, has at some time been lost. The conception of the statuette is closely related to the Dangolsheim Madonna: here, too, the cloak hugs the core of the figure like a nutshell. Consequently, it was dubbed the “Little Dangolsheim Saint”. Even an ascription to Niclaus Gerhaert von Leyden himself, who in all probability crafted the Dangolsheim Madonna, can be considered.
