Mail Coach, English model

The regular transportation of post by mail coach began in England in 1784. A regular mail coach service using the new road between Lisbon and Coimbra began to operate in 1798.
Mail Coach of Porto route, given by the Ministry of Finance to the general administration of CTT in November 1934. The structure comprises in a pillory with the drawing of the Imperial symbol and it is painted black and red/nut brown. In both doors we can notice a drawing and an inscription.
The first is a drawing of the Royal Coat of Arms. In the upper part of the drawing there is a royal crown with noble red draperies that fall gently into the Coat of Arms. On this drawing it is the inscription, in white on brown background, “CORREIO” (“MAIL”). The mail coach had the capacity for eight passengers, it was pulled by eight horses and had two lanterns that were placed one on each side of the front face.
The upper part has two seats, the front seat it is for the coachman and the outrider. The other seats are for two travelers in second class, immediately after this seat, there is a place for the passenger’s luggage. On the back over a compartment for mail with lock, exist another seat for two others passengers in second class.
