Mail-coach

"In the year 1784 English authorities introduced a new postal service that used a coach prototype inspired in a private sedan car. This new model of vehicle, characterized by the use of postal or transport passengers was named mail-coach.

In the last quarter of the XIX century, with little design changes, mail-coach was spread through several European cities, including Barcelona, where was introduced as a model of ideal carriage for wealthy families leisure.

Mail-coach exhibited in the Romantic Museum of Sitges, manufactured in France, belonged to the textile industrialist Francesc Sert I Badia. During the Republic (1931-1936) Francesc Sert I López, second count of Sert, sold his mail-coach to Esteve Esclusa, owner of a rent carriage establishment, called Morera Garage. After his death carriages passed to the “ Casa de la Caritat” (Charity House), institution in charge of moving dead persons and entourage to cemetery. In the year 1949, when Can Llopis was set up as the Romantic Museum of Sitges, the count of Sert mail-coach was moved to the garage house, where it is exhibited since then."
