As part of her ongoing series “Mailed Paintings” since 2004, Karin Sander mailed stretched white primed canvases in standard size to various art institutions without providing any protection or packaging. Different types of postal material such as stamps, address labels are placed upon the canvases as they travel and they collect traces of their journey. The collected material on both sides of the canvas not only constitute a visual composition by post offices, but also indicates the distances of its journey. Along all these journeys, new marks and layers build up on the canvas which can be approached as an open work of art.
