Main entrance gate

1863

Museu da República

Museu da República
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Double gate in cast iron, German manufacture. The figures appear symmetrically on each of the gates. On the left side, the female figure and the eagle (symbol of imperial power) look to the left, while their pairs on the right side look to the right. At the bottom left is the head of Neptune, god of the seas, surmounted by two dolphins that intertwine with an anchor and two tridents. In the same region, on the right, is the head of Hermes, god of commerce, and above it two cornucopias (symbol of plenty) crossed on a pair of spears. The sea and commerce, here, refer to the transatlantic commercial business of the Baron of Nova Friburgo, the original owner of the Palace.
