A large bull stands perfectly still in profile, hitched to a post at the center of the image and nearly filling the daguerreotype frame. Five men in hats stand at a distance behind the prized animal, framing and enclosing it in a watchful semi-circle of caretakers. This photograph was probably created to preserve a visual record of an animal that had recently brought recognition to its owner. The buildings visible in the background suggest that this daguerreotype record was made in town, probably in a central square where the award-winning animal would have been accessible to all curious onlookers.
