Makeup palettes were rarely absent from the collection of burial gifts in late prehistoric times. They were used for grinding raw materials into fine particles. These particles would then be mixed with grease and resin to produce eye makeup. Men and women alike commonly used the green substance malachite, a copper oxide, as a raw material. The tiny holes in the palettes suggest that they may have been worn as amulets.
