John McDermott worked as an animator for Disney Studios. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 29 September 1942. As a member of the 19th Marines, 3d Marine Division, he took part in the battles of Guam and Okinawa. After he was discharged from the Marine Corps, McDermott resumed his career as a freelance artist, creating magazine covers and cartoons. He also wrote six novels under the pen name of J.M. Ryan, one of which became the basis for the film Loving. McDermott died in April 1977.
