Male Figure

Oron peoples, Nigeriapossibly 19th century

Art Gallery of Ontario

Art Gallery of Ontario
Toronto, Canada

This hardwood sculpture is one of many that Oron artists carved to honour ancestors. Although production stopped around 1900, ancestor worship continued with sacrifices and libations - liquids poured out as religious offerings - up until the 1970s. Repeated use has led to the wearing away of scarification designs decorating the surface, and to the loss of status symbols such as hats, beards and horn-like drinking cups.
