Malvern Star advertising poster

1934

National Museum of Australia

National Museum of Australia
Canberra, Australia

When Australian cyclist Hubert Opperman won a Malvern Star bicycle at a race in 1922, it marked the beginning of a business relationship and friendship with company owner, Bruce Small, that would last 60 years.

Opperman became the public face of Malvern Star bicycles with his name and face adorning promotional materials and products.

This poster commemorates Opperman’s record-breaking ride from Land’s End in the far southwest of England to John o’ Groats on the north eastern tip of Scotland. Opperman completed the 866 mile journey in just over 57 hours.
