When John McIntosh first settled on his new land in 1811, photography was in its infancy. While there are no photos of McIntosh’s clearing efforts, this undated image from the Central Experimental Farm shows a man hacking stumps and bushes with a hand tool, representative of the work required to begin farming in the early 1800s.
