In his Musaeum Federico Borromeo writes that “Titian would have wanted to paint his father like this, armour-clad, to celebrate in a playful manner the nobility he claimed to have acquired though such offspring”. This would therefore make the portrait that of Gregorio Vecellio, Captain of the Centuria of Pieve di Cadore and the painter’s father.
