Man Pletivare socks

Knitted from coarse homespun wool of red and black colors. The parts of the socks are foot, toe – instep, heel and sock – leg. The patterns on the toe and heel knitted from dark blue wool. Floral motifs of multicolored wool embroidered on the upper part of the foot and the lower part of the leg. The upper part of the leg features three black stripes, karike, below which are anthropomorphic figures – dolls with a belt comprising black geometrized motifs. The upper part of the leg ends in picots, through whose loops a woollen string is drawn to strap the sock. An integral part of the traditional women’s dress. In winter, leggings of multicolored wool were worn over the socks. Made c. 1900. Such socks were worn in the area of Lepernica until World War I. The name pletivare comes from the patterns knitted into the socks. Home handwork; knitted with five needles; embroidered using the cross-stitch technique. Length: 45 cm; length of foot: 24 cm.
