A Chinese species, this tree was introduced to Sicily only in the nineteenth century, by way of Malta, and became widespread in Sicilian orchards following the dry rot epidemic that afflicted lemons. Its Latin name, “reticulata”, refers to the network of fibers that comes free when the fruit is peeled.
