Mantle Garniture

Clock and candelabra sets were typical in fashionable interiors of the late 19th century. Henry Clay Frick purchased this clock set, probably made in France, from relatively new luxury retailer Tiffany & Co., for $850 in March 1881, soon after moving into his bachelor apartment at the Monongahela House. It later was brought to Clayton, surrounded by French paintings from Frick’s collection and reproduction furniture in the Louis XV style. His daughter Helen moved the mantel set from the reception room to the parlor, where it remains today
