Manuel Inocêncio Liberato dos Santos was a musician and composer, nobleman of the Royal House and Knight of the Order of Christ. He was organist of the Royal House and music teacher of the infants in the reign of D. Maria II, as well as Master of the Capela Real.
As a recognition for his work, Queen D. Maria II donated him the Boisselot et Fils grand piano, which the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt had offered her during his passage through Portugal in 1845. This piano would later become part of the Museu Nacional da Música's collection.
The portrait was painted by his granddaughter, Emília dos Santos Braga (1867-1950), who was a pupil of José Malhoa, a reputed Portuguese painter. Liberato dos Santos is pictured in a cerimonial suit with several insignia, among these the neclace of the Ordem de S. Tiago de Espada and the Medal of the Ordem Militar de Cristo.
