Derbyshire has many rich beds of clay, and there is evidence that it has been extracted make pottery in the county for over 7000 years. During the 18th and 19th centuries several new potteries emerged particularly in the north east (around Chesterfield), south (around Swadlincote) and mid Derbyshire (around Denby) as well as Derby. Several of the businesses were famed for the high quality products they created, in particular the Joseph Bourne works at Denby (later known as Denby Pottery) and the china works at Derby which ultimately became Royal Crown Derby. Both of these businesses continue to thrive in the 21st century.
