This map, with its representation of the American continent, is part of the Atlas Sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et Fabricati Figura by Gerardus Mercator. This Flemish cartographer and geographer created the work between 1594 and 1595. It was the first time in history that the word atlas was used to designate this kind of work.
