Charters Towers is located in north Queensland. It is 140km from Townsville and 1300km from Brisbane.

It is not known how the town was named, but one explanation is that gold prospector Hugh Mosman saw three hills and named them Charters’ Tors after W.S.E.M. Charters, the mining warden at Ravenswood. The word Tors eventually became Towers.
