Mapungubwe undecorated recurved jar from a trench area known as JS4 on Mapungubwe Hill. Typologically this vessel is an example of a common Mapungubwe ceramic type, restricted and undecorated, with a globular body and a distinct shoulder junction. The vessel form is defined as spherical with a restricted orifice, a straight, rounded rim and a round base. The vessel is supported by a heavy globular body with a pronounced broad shoulder and short neck. Supposedly a ‘large beer pot’, this vessel was located within the upper levels of a residential hut floor of the later occupation period AD 1250 – AD 1290.
