Handmade glass marbles with swirl patterns required between 4 and 12 individual steps, depending on the number of and pattern of the different swirls, ribbons, or corkscrew strands. All swirl-patterned glass marbles were cut from a long glass rod or cane and then shaped into a ball. Handmade marbles like swirls have a telltale pontil, or a rough spot where the piece of glass was sheared off of the rod.
