It all begins in the 18th century, a century in which the use of maiolica pottery spreads in a way never seen before, reaching all social classes and influencing new ways of consuming meals and dining. In Sassuolo, a ducal holiday resort, various manufacturing facilities, including a terracotta kiln, had sprung up along the road known as Contrada del Borgo, which led from the town to the nearby hill. Next to it ran the Modena canal, which played a crucial role in the development of the local production apparatus by providing hydraulic power. Along this axis, raw materials such as clay and wood arrived, and finished products were sent to markets in the plains and beyond the Apennines.
This was the situation in Sassuolo when, in 1741, thanks to the initiative of a group of bourgeois individuals, a joint-stock company led by Gio' Andrea Ferrari was established to produce ceramics. The Duke of Modena granted Dallari a monopoly until the third generation and the privilege of placing the ducal coat of arms on the Factory.
