MARCH. MARS.

This print, representing the month of March, is part of a set of twelve prints representing the months of the year. Themed sets, such as this were popular throughout the eighteenth-century in England and America. An elegantly attired young woman stands in front of a window looking out on a windswept body of water. The choppy water, windmill and the sailboat allude to the association of March with windy weather. Due to the unpredictable weather, she's indoors working on sewing. She holds scissors, cloth in her hands, and a workbag. A bird in a cage can be seen hanging in the window. Two cloak pins are seen on the left-hand side of the window to tie back the curtain pulls. There is a floral carpet on the floor, but no furniture, suggesting that she might be standing in a hall area. To the rear a door is open, leading into what appears to be a furnished room.
