The first mining band in the Saar mining region supposedly dates back to the visit of Prince Wilhelm von Preußen, the late emperor Wilhelm I., in 1819. He visited the Geislautern pit and was received there with military music. However, as the military band was tied up, nine musical miners were brought together at short notice to form a music corps. The result, however, was of low quality and this encouraged the prince to form a band. The first Saarland mining band was then formed at the behest of the mine director Leopold Sello. Eleven mining bands with registered in Saarland with 342 musicians by 1900. They played on special occasions, festivals, ceremonies and parades. The previous "Berghautboisten" initially wore miners' uniforms and later received their own habits.
