Margot Begemann (1841–1907)

After Vincent van Gogh moved back in with his parents in the village of Nuenen in 1884, he fel in love with Margot, the neighbours' daughter. Margot, ten years his senior, responded to his advances. Their proposed marriage was opposed by Margot's family and Margot, distressed by all the village gossip, took poison. She survived, but the relationship was beyond saving and so the affair ended in dramatic fashion.
