Attributed to Martin van Meytens, this painting shows Maria Theresa in a blue gown and an ermine-lined cloak together with the Austrian dynastic crown. Van Meytens was private painter to the imperial family and as such their favoured portraitist. In 1759 he was appointed director of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.
