This portrait of General Lafayette was painted by Louise-Adéone Drölling, alias Madame Joubert (1797–1834). The daughter of Martin Drölling, a French genre painter from the Alsace region, she was one of the very few female painters of the time.
The Marquis of Lafayette is depicted in the grounds of his château in Grange-Bléneau, located in the Seine-et-Marne region, where he lived from 1802 until his death in 1834. This piece was painted in 1830, when Lafayette was 73 years old. It contrasts with the traditional depictions of the young general during the revolutionary period.
The general, in civilian clothing, simply wears a black jacket, a white shirt, pale pants, and spats. Holding a pair of gloves in his left hand, he is sat on a rock with a cane and a hat set to his left. We can see the wooded grounds of his castle in the background. Upon his death, the Duchess of Maillé said, "Mr. Lafayette has left this world. The hero of two worlds has passed into a third. "
