Marigolds, native to Mexico, were typical of Mexican garden’s during Kahlo’s life. Bouquets with the plant would sometimes fill the dining room of her home, Casa Azul. Marigolds remain popular in Mexican culture as part of Día de los Muertos (Day of The Dead) ceremonies and are thought to bring out the dead souls of famiily and friends.
