Marikana by the South African sculptor Mashifane Makunyane. The sculpture is homage to the South African political event known as the Marikana Massacre that took place at the Lonmin Platinum Mine near Marikana in the North West Province on 16 August 2012. During these unfortunate events the South African Police Service killed 34 miners during a strike at the Mine. Short Biography: Mashifane Makunyane was born in GaHlopha in the Limpopo Province and is a practising sculptor in Kempton Park, South Africa.
