Childless couple Mrikandu and Marudamati are granted a boon, but it's a supremely difficult choice: to beget an unvirtuous son who is low on intelligence but long on life or a highly intelligent and righteous son who would live no longer than sixteen. The austere couple chooser the latter and Markandeya grows up into ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. On the day he turns 16, Markandeya is deep in meditation with his arms around the Shivalingam and in trots Yama, the God of death on his steed with a noose in his hand. Seeing his devotee in trouble angers Shiva and he appears out of the lingam with his third eye blazing with anger; he battles Yama and defeats him and Yama in turn blesses Markandeya that he would remain youthful forever.
