This picture, as the previous one, depicts the Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) in the beginning of the 19th century. The square may seem larger than in real life, but the image is rich in detail and finely drawn – even the distant houses can be observed right down to their window frames. There is a fruit merchant with baskets and a tea seller with a samovar. This is an image that allows its viewer to “walk through the city” and explore its details. As later views are depicted in photographs, this detail-rich painting from a distant time remains a rarity.
