Marlow Lock and Lock Island, Marlow, Buckinghamshire

There are forty-five locks along the River Thames. Lock and weirs have been used for centuries for controlling the flow of river water and to aid navigation. Weirs were also used to divert water to power riverside mills. A weir at Marlow is recorded in Domesday Book and the present lock dates from 1927. Lock Island, between Marlow's lock and weir, is a private island of secluded riverside homes, accessible only by footbridge or from the river.
