The sculpture probably belonged to a tomb and portrays a couple of wealthy members of Ostia's society as the gods Mars and Venus. It is inspired by a model created to celebrate the emperor Marcus Aurelius and his wife Faustina the Younger. The figure of Mars recalls the military value of the man, while Venus alludes to beauty and sensuality of the woman. About 170 AD
