Daura began painting this portrait of his daughter, Martha, shortly before Christmas of 1943, finishing on New Year's Day 1944. At the time, the Dauras were living at Tuckaway, a Virginia farm, and Pierre and Martha had become naturalized US citizens a few months earlier. During the same time, Daura painted an image of Cy Twombly, then a young art student.
