This Martin Marietta Shareholder Memo indicates the award for the maximum performance fee which is an indicator of exemplary work. This is not just a financial memo but represents a quality outcome AND leadership that went to bat for their staff. During interviews with Vikings, it was shared that following the project, the maximum award was not immediately offerred. However the Martin Marietta leadership went to bat for their workers and said "I will return when i get the maximum award." And so it was done. The Viking mission was an exception not just because of the technical and scientific achievements but also because leadership worked as hard for their staff as staff did for leadership. Accountability was demanded and accepted across the board. This sentiment reflects a similar sentiment issue in the forward of the original Martin Marietta proposal to win the bid for the Viking Mission, by Martin Marietta Leadership. Donald Rauth's assurance was stated in the proposal, but Vice President and General Manager of Martin Marietta Denver Division, William Pardy noted even more significantly that "We have tried to reflect...all of our capabilities - the experience of our people, their technical strengths, our concepts of management, and the scope of our facilities. What they may not fully reflect is the true motivational level of our Viking Team... The fact that our team members are higly stimulated is in itself the most important factor. It is our experience that a high level of motivation invariably makes the difference between routine and superior performance and pays off in schedule and cost savings..." This kind of leadership seen across the mission, through interviews with Vikings at each institute, starting from the Mission Director, Jim Martin, and through the ranks was exemplary.
