At first sight it is difficult to believe that this item is made of glass. Developed in order to imitate Chinese porcelain, lattimo (opaque white) glass reached extraordinarily elegant heights thanks to the skills of the ancient Venetian master glassmakers. Introduced to Murano in the 14th century, it was prepared by adding a mixture of lead and oxidised tin to the glass paste, or by means of a similar process where lead, arsenic and the powder from oxidised bone were mixed together. This technique flourished during the Renaissance and was also used to produce canework and filigree glass decorations for transparent glass objects. The picture shows a Venetian lattimo glass bottle from the 18th century displayed at Casa Martini.
Casa Martini hosts the Martini Wine Museum, opened in 1961 as the first of its kind in Italy. The collection tells the origins of aromatized wines and the aperitivo occasion, with items that date back to the 7th century B.C.
Casa Martini is the heart of the Martini history and production. Located in Pessione, at the company’s historic premises near Turin (Italy), the Martini brand home marks the meeting point between tradition and the future. It is where aperitifs and sparkling wines are developed and created to be enjoyed around the world, but also a place of the soul, where the values that inspired the company founders in 1863 are still tangible.
Casa Martini is a destination for tourists visiting Piedmont and offers a wide range of experiences: the Martini Wine Museum and the Mondo Martini Gallery are the permanent exhibits, together with the Martini Discovery Tour that includes visits to the production plant; Terrazza Martini and the Bar Academy are a perfect set for events and leisure.
