Although it was already known in Egypt and Mesopotamia, the technique of glassmaking was perfected during the first century BC in Syria, Palestine and Phoenicia and resulted in the production of high-quality goods of elegant design. It was not long before it had spread all over the Mediterranean. Prized everywhere, glassmaking during the time of Imperial Rome, from the first century AD onwards, took off at a phenomenal rate producing articles of extreme delicacy and refinement, as this artifact from the Imperial Period displayed at Casa Martini shows.
Casa Martini hosts the Martini Wine Museum, opened in 1961 as the first of its kind in Italy. The collection tells the origins of aromatized wines and the aperitivo occasion, with items that date back to the 7th century B.C.
