This is a page from a sketch book used by Cara Bray on a tour of the continent in 1849. She was accompanied by her husband Charles Bray and their friend Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot). This trip came at an important time in Mary Ann’s life. Her father passed away just before the trip, leaving her with a limited income. At the end of the trip Mary Ann would have to decide how to support herself financially. This page contains two sketches of Evans.
